  • Creating Bonsai from Garden Center Stock

    In this hands-on workshop, students will learn bonsai basics and create a bonsai tree. If you have ever wanted to learn the art of bonsai and how these living works of art are created, then this workshop is for you! Bring your own bonsai pot if you wish and special bonsai soil will be provided. What to bring: sharp pair of scissors, garden gloves, and apron. Soil, wire, and a Juniper will be provided. The class will run from 9am to 12pm on Saturday, April 29th. The class is $35/person and is limited to 15 students and is in the Garden Study Center in the New Orleans Botanical Garden.     A little about the instructor: Jim Osborne is a native to New Orleans and an “Award Winning Bonsai Artist” winning the 2008 Vaughn Banting award.  He has served as a Board of Director for the past seven years and is past Vice-President and past President of the Bonsai Society. He has displayed his personal bonsai collection in the fall and spring New Orleans Botanical Garden Flower Show for many years. Jim has also displayed his bonsai at Art in Bloom in the New Orleans Museum of Art.

    Friends of City Park is participating in GiveNOLA Day, the community’s 24-hour online giving event, hosted by the Greater New Orleans Foundation. In the spirit of the day, from 3pm to 7pm the Carousel Gardens Amusement Park will be open for unlimited select rides with a minimum $10 online credit card donation per person to Friends of City Park through GiveNOLA.org!     Join your friends at the Peristyle for exercising fun in New Orleans City Park with lululemon. These events are free and open to the public. Each class is from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. Every month there will be a new instructor who will bring a new style. HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) use intervals and a variety of movements, to raise your heart rate in a short amount of time. You can expect things like squats, push up variations, burpees, and lunges to name a few. Instructors may bring along free weights, kettle bells, jump ropes, and other accessories to enhance the class. Bring water to stay hydrated and a towel. If guest are required to bring anything else for a particular class lululemon will inform you via their Facebook event page. If you’d like to know more, want to know if a class is canceled due to weather, or have questions, call 504-8333-5053 and ask for Lindsey Dennis or Brittany Garlepied.

  • Culinary Herb Bags Workshop

    Join your friends to make an herb bag to hang by your porch, kitchen window, or back door. Learn about herb-gifts and cooking with herbs as well as the herb plants themselves. You will create and take an herb bag home with you. The class will take place in the Garden Study Center and is $15/ person. There is a class limit of 25 people. Pre-registration is required for all classes to ensure that a class is not canceled due to low enrollment. To register call 483-9473 or email scapley@nocp.org. The class will run 2 hours. 

    Instructor: Susan Capley, Education Director, New Orleans Botanical Garden
    A little about the instructor: Susan Capley is the Education Director at the New Orleans Botanical Garden for 9 years. She has been in the horticulture field for twenty five years and has worked in organic vegetable production, residential landscaping to Grounds Manager (Horticulturist) at the University of Kentucky Arboretum. Susan has a BS degree in Plant and Soil Science from the University of Kentucky

    The New Orleans Botanical Garden in New Orleans City Park is proud to join American Public Gardens Association and 500+ gardens nationwide in celebrating an annual day of awareness that honors the role public gardens play in promoting plant and water conservation, education, and environmental leadership.

    We invite the New Orleans community and tourists alike to explore the diverse beauty that the New Orleans Botanical Garden has to offer as well as its deep rooted history starting with the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the 1930's.

    Our offer: Free tours with admission to the garden. Tours will be given at 10:30 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm. Each tour last one hour and 30 minutes depending on questions. Please arrive 15 minutes early before the tour begins. Limit 15 per group, all individuals welcome up to 50 people per tour. Admission: $6 per person, kids 36" and under Free, Friends of City Park Free

  • Pruning for Aesthetics Part II

    Join us for a pruning demonstration by Landscape Architect Robin Tanner. He will show you how renovate over-grown shrubs improving plant health as well as contribute to the landscape design. This is an outdoor class so proper shoes and attire should be considered.
    Meet at the Arrival Garden in the New Orleans Botanical Garden. The class begins at 10:30 am and runs till noon. Register ahead of time by calling 504-483-9473 or email scapley@nocp.org. The class is $10/person.
    A little about the instructor: Robin Tanner has a Landscape Architecture degree from Louisiana State University. He studied Japanese Gardens in Japan working with a garden maker. He has spent decades in practicing Landscape Architecture and a lifelong student of Japanese Gardens. Robin designed and installed the Japanese Garden, the Southern Shade Garden, and the Enrique Alférez Sculpture Garden at the New Orleans Botanical Garden.
