    NOMA has teamed up with the East Jefferson Wellness Center to offer wellness classes throughout the week.  Saturday morning’s Yoga in the Sculpture Garden classes are taught in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden when weather allows.  The beginner friendly classes are $5 and free for NOMA and East Jefferson Wellness Center members.  To register for Yoga in the Sculpture Garden, call East Jefferson Healthfinders at (504) 456-5000.

    Over the past 16 years, the Voodoo Music + Arts Experience has built a reputation for drawing some of the biggest names in music to City Park for one of the biggest Halloween celebrations in the country. This year is no different, with a line-up that includes 75+ artists. The Experience takes place on the Festival Grounds also include a wide variety of New Orleans cuisine, a Farris wheel, rides and large scale interactive art installations. Doors open daily at 10:30am. The date is firm but the times listed here are subject to change without notice. Please visit worshipthemusic.com for details.

    The Mystics are guaranteed to be entertaining, and always a sellout, so don’t miss this show featuring the music of Motown.  Songs from the Temptations, O’Jays, Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding will all be part of this soulful tribute to some of the greatest music from the 1970’s.
    The weekly Thursdays at Twilight series showcases some of the finest musicians in New Orleans featuring an assortment of music styles.   • Creating Bonsai from Garden Center Stock

    In this three hour hands on workshop, you will learn bonsai basics and you will create your very own bonsai tree. If you have ever wanted to learn the art of bonsai and how these living works of art are created, then this workshop is for you! Bring your own bonsai pot if you wish as special bonsai soil will be provided. What to bring: sharp pair of scissors, garden gloves, and apron. Soil, wire, and a Juniper will be provided.
    A little about the instructor: Jim Osborne is a native to New Orleans and an “Award Winning Bonsai Artist” winning the 2008 Vaughn Banting award.  He has served as a Board of Director for the past seven years and is past Vice-President and past President of the Bonsai Society. He has displayed his personal bonsai collection in the fall and spring New Orleans Botanical Garden Flower Show for many years. Jim has also displayed his bonsai at Art in Bloom in the New Orleans Museum of Art.
    The class is Saturday November 8 from 9am to 12pm. The class is in the Garden Study Center in the New Orleans Botanical Garden. The class is $35 per person with a class limit of 15 people.  Pre-registration is required for all classes to ensure that a class is not canceled due to low enrollment.

  • Gallery talk on Photorealism

    Join NOMA for a special gallery talk on Photorealism: The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Collection, led by Louis Meisel with assistance from six artists represented in the show.

    Meisel is one of the earliest champions of this art movement, and is credited with coining the term “photorealism.”

    Participating artists: Tony Brunelli, Tom Blackwell, Don Jacot, Don Eddy, Ben Johnson, Bernardo Torrens

    This event is related to the exhibition Photorealism: The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Collection.

  • Native Plant Selections and Design-Management Approaches for Bio-swales, Retention Basins, and Rain

    The lecture will be about: Native Plant Selections and Design-Management Approaches for Bio-swales, Retention Basins, and Rain Gardens in the Gulf Coastal Urban Landscape.

    Marc Pastorek is a consultant and seed provider for natural upland meadow and wetland-prairie landscapes in Louisiana and the surrounding region. He and his wife Candi are owners of Pastorek Habitats, a Covington-based firm focused on design and construction of environmentally significant landscapes. They manage a 10 acre seed farm in Pearl River County Mississippi that contains 50 trial gardens established 15 years ago, all produced through seed mixes of high-conservatism, local-genetic native herb and grass flora. Pastorek collaborates with Landscape Architects and Conservation Biologists to build and manage natural urban gardens, prairie habitat restoration projects and wetland mitigation banks using seed, nursery-grown plants and field-dug plants. Marc writes the blog, Meadowmaker-Seed man-Artist, and assists with Conservation Biology and Landscape Architecture classes at LSU-Baton Rouge.
