    The Yat Pack is a New Orleans based band modeled on the 60’s Vegas Swing Era.  They will perform classic big band numbers by Frank Sinatra, Louis Prima, Dean Martin, and Bobby Darin as well as contemporary artists like Michael Bublé, Billy Joel, and Harry Connick, Jr. They will also mix in a heavy dose of good old New Orleans R&B.  Thursdays at Twilight series showcases some of the finest musicians in New Orleans featuring an assortment of music styles.   • Rose Pruning Demonstrations

    Come to the garden and learn how to prune roses!  The instructor, Susan Capley, will demonstrate and explain when, how, and why to prune your beloved roses. Susan will go over pruning methods addressing the needs of a hybrid tea rose to a New Orleans favorite: Old Garden Rose. Dress to be outside and wear comfortable shoes. Please remember to wear comfortable shoes and outdoor attire as some of the class is outdoors. The class begins at 10:30am and runs and hour. The class is $10/person and takes place in the Garden Study Center.  Registration is required. For details and to register please contact Susan at 483-9473 or scapley@nocp.org.
    A little about the instructor: Susan Capley is the Education Director at the New Orleans Botanical Garden for 9 years. She has been in the horticulture field for twenty five years and has worked in organic vegetable production, residential landscaping to Grounds Manager (Horticulturist) at the University of Kentucky Arboretum. Susan has a BS degree in Plant and Soil Science from the University of Kentucky.

  • Native Plant Sale

    The New Orleans Botanical Garden will host a native plant sale at the Botanical Garden Gift Shop on January 28, 2017. The January sale, the first of its kind, will be held in conjunction with the Winter Gardening Symposium, The Living Louisiana Landscape, presented by Master Gardeners of Greater New Orleans and LSU AgCenter at the New Orleans Museum of Art. Symposium attendees will receive a 20% discount on plant purchases. Click here to read about the symposium.

    The sale will be from noon to 4:30 pm on Saturday, January 28, 2017, and is open to the public with free admission. For Sale: more than 30 varieties of native perennials, annuals, grasses, vines, and shrubs will be available. Featured plants: Louisiana Iris, Coral Honeysuckle, Virginia Sweetspire, Cardinal Flower, and Hinckley’s Columbine.

    James Rivers is a New Orleans musical treasure. He plays a mixture of Rock, Progressive Jazz, Rhythm and Blues and Gospel; the sort of music that implies something for everybody when it’s played. Rivers, one of only three Jazz musicians ever known to play the bagpipes, would probably call himself a saxophonist, but his forte is really an amazing musical dexterity that has helped him master a dozen other instruments.   • Rose Propagation Workshop

    This class will include instruction on how to propagate the beloved New Orleans old garden roses.  Don Hanson, a volunteer and rose enthusiast, will teach how to choose the right rose and make the proper cuttings needed for propagation. Students will leave with a wealth of information about rose propagation, care and maintenance, as well as gain hands-on knowledge learning to a propagated rose in class. This is a hands on program and all materials are included with this workshop.
    Please remember to wear comfortable shoes and outdoor attire as some of the class is outdoors. The class begins at 10:30am and runs to noon. The class is $15/person and takes place in the Garden Study Center.  Registration is required and the class is limited to 25 p[people.     A little about the instructor:
    Don Hanson is a rose enthusiast and volunteer at the New Orleans Botanical Garden. He is a Master Gardener and over the years he has been a member of the New Orleans Old Garden Rose Society and the New Orleans Rose Society. He has an enormous amount of experience in pruning, care of roses, and rose propagation. Don is a very entertaining speaker that makes learning fun!

  • ‘Flower Pressing’ Class

    This workshop will cover instructions on how to press flowers and will also have discussion about the many uses of pressed flowers. Each participant will make a bookmark and a greeting card using pressed flowers to take home. Supplies will be provided. The class is $15/person and will run from 10am to 11:30am in the Garden Study Center building in the New Orleans Botanical Garden. There is a class limit and registration ahead of time is required. (Pre-registration is required for all classes to ensure that a class is not canceled due to low enrollment.) To register call 483-9473 or email scapley@nocp.org
