  • Thursdays at Twilight - The New John Robichaux Society Orchestra

    John Robichaux a Creole, born in 1866 in Thibodeaux, was the leader of the premier society orchestra in New Orleans in the years prior to the birth of ragtime and jazz.  Orchestra leader Tom Hook re-creates the sounds of The John Robichaux Orchestra. Drawing largely upon European ballroom dance music, the John Robichaux Orchestra will perform marches, waltzes, schottisches, cakewalks, and quadrilles; the very music that would become the foundation of ragtime and subsequently New Orleans jazz. Thursdays at Twilight series showcases some of the finest musicians in New Orleans featuring an assortment of music styles.     Series Features Extended Hours, Entertainment, and Free Admission on Wednesday Evenings in April (2017)
    The New Orleans Botanical Garden will extend its hours to 8pm every Wednesday during the month of April to celebrate "Evenings
    with Enrique." Throughout the year, each Wednesday is free to Louisiana residents, courtesy of The Helis Foundation.
    Each week, "Evenings with Enrique" will feature local musicians playing among the collection of 14 sculptures by the famed Mexican-American artist. Guides will be available to discuss the life and work of Enrique Alférez under enhanced lighting and
    fire baskets suspended from the branches of the Live Oak tree. Guests are invited to purchase mojitos and Latin food provided by La Cocinita Food Truck.
    Free Hours: 10am to 8pm
    Special Programing: 5pm to 8pm

    Jazz pianist and New Orleans native Steve Pistorius formed the Southern Syncopators in 2007 .The band specializes in the earlier styles of New Orleans Jazz, playing rags, marches, waltzes ,stomps and popular tunes from the early 20th century as well as the classic compositions of Jazz icons Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet and Louis Armstrong.
